Leaders in Mbarara City have officially launched the construction of a perimeter wall around Independence Park in a move aimed at improving security and protecting public property.
The project, awarded to SM Kirimi Enterprise Limited, will be implemented in two phases.
Under the first phase, contractors will fence 133 meters of the park within three months at a cost of UGX 76 million.
According to Mark Nkwasiibwe, the works will include installation of columns, metal grills, hardcore filling, and concrete casting to construct a 1.1-meter wall around the park.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Jomo Mugabi said the park had for a long time been used as a hideout for criminals.
He urged city leaders to transform the area into a productive public space with projects that can benefit residents and the council.
Deputy City Mayor Priscah Mulongo Muganzi said the development will also include recreational facilities such as a football playground, chairs for relaxation, and tree planting to improve the environment within the park.
Mulongo added that the project is being financed using locally generated revenue collected by the city authorities.
Meanwhile, Gerald Tukamuheebwa, who officially commissioned the project, welcomed the construction of the perimeter wall, saying it would help protect the park from land grabbers and improve security in the area.
