Shock and grief have engulfed residents of Nyantungu Cell, Bukiiro Town Council in Mbarara District, after a 10-year-old Primary Two pupil at Nyantungu Primary School was found dead after allegedly hanging himself from an avocado tree.
The deceased, Isaac Zamukama, a son of Didas Nuwagiira, was reportedly sent by his mother to the bush to tie up goats after schools had closed for the second-term holiday. According to school headteacher Jonath Mugume, the boy was later discovered hanging from an avocado tree. Bukiiro Town Council Mayor David Kitengye said the child had earlier had a misunderstanding with his elder brother.
Police retrieved the body and took it to Bwizibwera Health Centre IV for postmortem. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the circumstances surrounding the death. Mugume said the school community remains shocked and is trying to establish what may have led to the death, while Mayor Kitengye urged parents to closely monitor their children during the holidays.
