The First Lady and Minister for Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni, has called on universities and higher learning institutions to uphold the core principles of education while integrating artificial intelligence (AI).
Speaking at the opening of the 6th Annual Higher Education Conference in Mbarara City on Monday, Mrs. Museveni highlighted that while AI offers transformative opportunities, it should not undermine the fundamental process of learning how to learn.
She urged institutions to balance technological progress with maintaining critical thinking and foundational skills among students.
Prof. Lawrence Muganga, Vice Chancellor of Victoria University, acknowledged the growing role of AI in academic research, citing its contributions to transformative projects.
Similarly, Prof. John Mugisha, Vice Chancellor of Bishop Stuart University, stressed the importance of responsible AI use, noting the challenge students face in navigating vast amounts of information.
The two-day conference, organized by the National Council for Higher Education, focuses on the theme “Challenges, Best Practices, and Strategies for Artificial Intelligence Integration in Higher Education in Uganda.”
It brings together experts, policymakers, and educators to explore ways of leveraging AI while safeguarding Uganda’s educational integrity.
