Authorities in Kasese District have arrested the NRM Registrar for Ibanda–Kyanya Town Council, Mr. Moris Kithenge, over allegations of disrupting the party’s registration exercise by concealing register books for multiple villages.
The arrest was confirmed by the Rwenzori East Regional Police Spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Nelson Tumusiime, who stated that Mr. Kithenge is accused of hiding 15 NRM register books meant for 15 villages—a move that sparked concerns about transparency and the integrity of the party’s ongoing membership verification and registration process.
“We have launched a full investigation into the matter to understand the motive and any possible accomplices involved,” said SP Tumusiime. He added that such actions compromise the democratic process within the ruling party and would be treated with the seriousness they deserve.
The registration exercise, which is taking place across all lower local governments in Kasese, is a crucial part of the NRM’s effort to update its membership records ahead of internal elections.
By the end of the exercise, Kasese District, which comprises over 860 villages within 44 lower local councils, is expected to have 26,722 registered NRM members, including local council one flag bearers.
Local leaders and party officials have since called for calm, urging members to cooperate with electoral officials to ensure a credible and inclusive registration process.
