Story by Aggrey Twesigye

Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) has officially opened a cutting-edge facility for its Faculty of Computing and Informatics, thanks to funding from the Ugandan government. Located at the university’s Kihumiro campus along the Mbarara-Bushenyi-Ishaka highway, the new structure aims to address the growing demand for space to support the university’s expanding educational programs.

During the official handover ceremony, Prof. Pauline Byakika Kibwika, the Vice Chancellor of MUST, expressed her gratitude to the government for its investment in higher education and the university’s infrastructure. The state-of-the-art facility, valued at over UGX 11 billion, was completed in two phases: the first phase, costing UGX 3.8 billion, was executed from 2017 to 2019, while the second phase was completed at a cost of UGX 8.3 billion.

University Secretary Vincent Kansiime Kwatampora shared that as part of its broader development strategy, the university plans to relocate the Faculty of Science from its town campus to the Kihumiro campus, allowing for further expansion and modernization of the institution.

Eng. Brian Buhanda from the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), which oversaw the construction, confirmed that the facility is 99% complete and urged the university to prioritize its maintenance for long-term sustainability. The new facility is expected to significantly enhance MUST’s ability to deliver innovative education and research in computing and informatics, marking a key milestone in the university’s ongoing growth and development.

This new addition to the university’s infrastructure strengthens MUST’s commitment to providing top-tier education and training, contributing to the country’s technological and research advancements.
