A group of residents in Mbarara City has filed a petition with the Inspector General of Government (IGG) expressing dissatisfaction with the recently completed rehabilitation of Katete Bridge.

The petition follows incidents of vandalism at the bridge, where stand poles designed to prevent heavy truck access were destroyed shortly after the bridge’s reopening, following five months of closure.

Led by Ali Mutabazi, the residents are demanding accountability for the UGX 366 million spent on the project, arguing that the visible work done does not justify the high cost.

In addition to concerns over the bridge, the petition also calls for investigations into potential irregularities in street parking management, council recruitment processes, and tender awards.

Attempts to reach City Clerk Assy Abireebe Tumwesigire for comment were unsuccessful, as he reportedly locked himself in his office.

Earlier this week, Resident City Commissioner Catherine Hellen Kamwine clarified that her visit to the bridge was for a final inspection, not a formal project commissioning.
