The Grade One Magistrate’s Court in Kamwenge has remanded Levi Amarakutunga, the Kitagwenda District Councilor representing Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), along with three of his workers, to Katojo Government Prison in Kabarole District over the alleged murder of four-year-old Trinah Ainomugisha.
Amarakutunga, the prime suspect, appeared before Grade One Magistrate His Worship Innocent Ahimbisibwe on Tuesday, alongside his co-accused Radius Tumusiime (30), Deus Kakuru (28), and Nicholus Asingura (18).
They are facing charges of murder and kidnap but could not take a plea as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. Magistrate Ahimbisibwe ruled that the suspects be remanded until April 14, 2025, when their case will be mentioned in the High Court.
Defense lawyer Ayebare Mugarura of Mubilu and Aruho Advocates, representing Amarakutunga, expressed concerns over being denied access to his client, calling it a violation of constitutional rights.
However, State Attorney Naboth Atuhaire requested the court to allow more time for investigations.
By 8:00 AM, the court premises were packed with grieving relatives and supporters of the deceased, many wearing T-shirts with the words ‘Justice for Trinah’.
Amarakutunga and his co-accused were arrested on March 16, 2025, following the discovery of Ainomugisha’s body in a farm near the crime scene.
The gruesome killing sparked outrage in the community, with residents demanding swift justice.
The case will return to court in April, where it is expected to be heard in the High Court.
