Kisoro District has received more than 6,000 refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since the start of this month, as conflict in Eastern DRC continues to intensify.

Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Hajji Badru Ssebyalla confirmed the rising number of arrivals, with hundreds crossing the border daily in search of safety and food.

Ssebyalla reported that the Nyakabande Transit Centre is now overcrowded due to the overwhelming influx. In response, authorities have begun transferring refugees to other centers to accommodate new arrivals.

While addressing reporters yesterday, the RDC cautioned Kisoro residents, especially those living in border sub-counties and town councils, against offering shelter to refugees.

He warned that some individuals might be fleeing as combatants, while others could pose health risks or threaten Uganda’s security.

Ssebyalla called on local leaders to work closely with security agencies to monitor movements along unregulated border points.

He emphasized the need for all refugees to pass through designated checkpoints for thorough screening to ensure public safety.

Authorities continue to manage the growing humanitarian crisis, urging cooperation from both residents and security officials to maintain stability in the region.
