All livestock markets in Kamwenge District have been temporarily closed following concerns over the emerging threat of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) reported in neighbouring districts.
The decision was reached after a consultation meeting between district leaders and veterinary experts, who warned of a high risk of cross-district transmission if animal movement is not controlled.
Kamwenge Resident District Commissioner Afrikano Aharikundira said the closure is a preventive measure aimed at protecting livestock and safeguarding farmers’ livelihoods.
He noted that surveillance and response efforts have been intensified across the district, urging farmers to avoid moving animals, report suspected cases, and comply with control measures while enforcement teams ensure strict adherence.
