By Jovita Kyarisiima

The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development has unveiled the plan for the construction of the Ibanda Saza Market, a modern daily market aimed at improving trade and urban development in Ibanda Municipality.

The project is being implemented under the Uganda Cities and Municipalities Infrastructure Development Programme (UCMID), which is supported by the World Bank to improve infrastructure in cities, municipalities, and refugee-hosting districts.

Speaking during the presentation of the plan, Arthur Abigaba, an Urban Development Officer, said the programme focuses on projects that can be completed within two years to transform urban areas across the country.

Abigaba added that suggestions from municipal leaders will be considered, with possible adjustments to the plan to address technical gaps and improve the market design.

An official from Ibanda Municipality, Mark Deo, said the project is estimated to cost over Shs 700 million and is expected to accommodate more than 600 vendors.

Vendors have called for the inclusion of essential utilities, security, and other facilities to ensure the new market meets their needs and provides a safe working environment.
