Students at Bishop Stuart University have voiced support for the introduction of multiparty politics within higher institutions, as candidates contesting for guild president push for greater political inclusion.
Aaron Ainomugisha, a second-year Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication student, criticized restrictions on student political participation following his nomination for guild president. He argued that such limitations hinder leadership ambitions and deny students opportunities to engage in governance.
He questioned why universities continue to restrict political activity despite national efforts to promote democracy, saying this undermines students’ ability to participate meaningfully in leadership.
Ainomugisha also called on the Ministry of Education and Sports Uganda to ensure universities become more politically inclusive and supportive of student engagement in partisan politics.
He noted that allowing multiparty politics would help students connect with national affairs beyond campus life, warning that continued restrictions could lead to frustration and disengagement.
A total of six candidates have been cleared to contest in the guild elections, which are scheduled for May 9, 2026.
