Police in Rukungiri District have arrested a woman in connection with the alleged murder of her estranged husband in Buyanja Sub-county.

The suspect, Akankwasa Patience, a resident of Nyamayenje Cell, Ndere Parish in Southern Division, Rukungiri District, is accused of killing Nuwamanya Bruce, 32, a resident of Rwenanura Cell, Nyabitete Parish, Buyanja Sub-county.

According to police, the incident occurred yesterday at around 1:00 p.m. in Rwenanura Cell, Nyabitete Parish. Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased had separated from Akankwasa and later married another woman, while the suspect returned to live with her biological parents.

Police reports show that on June 2, 2026, Akankwasa reportedly approached area chairperson Tugume Eriab seeking support for necessities for their child. Tugume contacted the deceased, and the two allegedly agreed that she would secure a house for rent, with the deceased providing financial support.

It is further alleged that the deceased gave her household items, including a mattress and blanket, and later Shs70,000 to facilitate rent.

However, police say that shortly after leaving, Akankwasa allegedly returned to the deceased’s home while concealing a knife and found him having lunch with his current wife.

The current wife had reportedly stepped into another room when she heard an alarm raised by the deceased. Upon returning, she allegedly found him with severe injuries. Neighbours responded, pursued the suspect, and apprehended her before alerting local authorities.

The matter was reported to Buyanja Police Station, prompting officers from CPS Rukungiri to visit and document the scene. Police say witness statements were recorded, and the body was taken to Buyanja Health Centre IV for postmortem examination.

Outgoing Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Maate said the suspect was also rescued from an angry mob that allegedly assaulted her, leaving her with head injuries. She was later admitted to Rukungiri Health Centre IV as investigations continue.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
