The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Mitooma District, presided over by His Worship Gibson Muhangi, on Thursday remanded 45-year-old Juliet Tushabomwe until June 11, 2026, after she was arraigned on charges of aggravated torture and attempted murder.

Tushabomwe, a peasant and resident of Rweibare Village, Kyanzaire Parish, Kashenshero Sub-county in Mitooma District, denied the charges when they were read to her in court and entered a plea of not guilty.

Prosecution alleges that between August 2025 and April 28, 2026, at Rweibare Village in Mitooma District, the accused unlawfully and intentionally subjected Samuel Akamumpa to severe torture by forcing him to swallow 49 sewing needles and fragments of broken pen pieces.

Court further heard that the accused is also charged with attempted murder contrary to Section 187 of the Penal Code Act.

It is alleged that during the same period and in the same area, Tushabomwe attempted to cause the death of Akamumpa.

The court was informed that the victim, Samuel Akamumpa, remains admitted at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital where he is receiving treatment.

The magistrate advised the accused of her right to apply for bail, but since she did not have a surety present in court, she was remanded to prison until the next hearing.

The case was adjourned to June 11, 2026, for further mention.
