Police in Rukungiri District have taken action to uphold the rule of law and safeguard peaceful political activities following the defacement of campaign posters in Nyakagyeme Sub-county.
A 42-year-old local leader, Darius Nabasa, the Chairperson of Omukibungo Village, has been arrested and is currently in police custody in connection with the incident. Police are also actively pursuing two other suspects believed to have been involved.
The incident reportedly occurred on January 7, 2026, at Half London Trading Centre in Omukibungo Village.
According to police, the matter arose after Hon. Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, the NRM flag bearer for Rujumbura Constituency, held a campaign rally at the trading centre earlier that evening. Campaign posters displayed around the venue were later allegedly vandalised.
The case was promptly reported to Rukungiri Police Station, triggering immediate investigations. Police recorded statements from witnesses, visited the scene, and recovered damaged campaign materials, which were documented as exhibits.
Police have reassured the public of their commitment to ensuring a peaceful, free, and fair campaign environment for all political actors. Investigations are ongoing, and efforts to arrest the remaining suspects continue.
The Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate, called on community members to respect the law, promote tolerance, and promptly report any acts that threaten peaceful political engagement.
