RDC Orders Police to Shoot Livestock Thieves, Accuses Local Leaders of Fueling Crime

By Aggrey Twesigye

The Mbarara Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Nicholas Nuwagiira, has directed police officers in the district to shoot and kill anyone found transporting stolen livestock as part of efforts to curb escalating cases of cattle theft.

Nuwagiira also accused some local leaders of aiding and abetting livestock theft, alleging they are working with criminal networks involved in the illegal trade of stolen animals.

The RDC’s directive comes amid growing concerns over rampant livestock theft in several parts of the district, where farmers continue to suffer losses.

Meanwhile, residents of Kabare Ward in Rubindi-Ruhumba Town Council have welcomed the tough stance but are calling for the reinstatement of night patrols to strengthen security.

Residents say the suspension of night patrols has left communities vulnerable, allowing thieves to operate freely at night.

A resident, Denis Mwebembezi, said he has lost several animals and appealed for the resumption of regular patrols, noting that stolen livestock is often transported to markets in Kyenshama, Ibanda, and Buhweju.
