Tensions ran high at Maziba Mixed Primary School in Ndorwa East, Kabale District, after angry parents and residents accused a teacher of demonic possession of pupils, resulting in violent mob action and widespread property destruction.
The teacher, identified as Monday Expedito, allegedly “sacrificed” several pupils who have since been exhibiting strange behaviors such as barking, crawling, and screaming.
The accusations triggered a community uproar during a meeting led by Kabale Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Godfrey Nyakahuma and Acting District Education Officer (DEO) Moses Bwengye.
The meeting escalated when nine pupils displayed bizarre behavior in front of attendees, further fueling suspicions. In response, a mob stormed Expedito’s home, burning four houses, destroying crops, and killing livestock.
RDC Nyakahuma ordered Expedito to report to Kabale Police for his own protection and condemned the mob justice.
Police warned that those responsible for the destruction would face arrest.
Authorities, including local leaders and church officials, have urged calm and called for prayers. DEO Bwengye announced that classes would resume on June 10, but also ordered another teacher, Doreen Nayebare, to stay away from the school pending investigations.
Maziba Mixed Primary School has an enrollment of 586 learners.
Expedito and his wife remain in hiding as police continue investigations into the incident and those behind the violent retaliation.
