Concerns are mounting over the deteriorating state of Independence Park in Mbarara City North Division, with local leaders urging immediate intervention to restore the once-thriving recreational space.
Deputy Resident City Commissioner Jackline Kankunda has voiced serious concerns about the park’s current condition, describing it as “bushy and overgrown,” and warning that its neglect not only reflects poorly on the city council but also poses a threat to public safety.
Kankunda’s warning was echoed by Muhammad Byansi, the councillor for Kakoba A, who criticized the city council for its inaction and warned that continued neglect could pave the way for illegal land grabbing.
In 2022, Mbarara City Council entered into a partnership with the Advocates Coalition for Development and Environment (ACODE) to restore the park’s green cover and revitalize the area.
However, nearly three years later, the project remains incomplete, and the park’s condition continues to decline.
Residents and local leaders alike are now demanding that the council prioritize the rehabilitation of Independence Park to reclaim its status as a safe, vibrant public space for the community.
