Supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) took to the streets of Mbarara City on Monday, April 28, demanding the immediate release of Edward Ssebufu, widely known as Eddie Mutwe, the personal bodyguard of NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine).

Mutwe was reportedly abducted on Sunday, April 27, by individuals in both military and civilian attire at Kiwango Trading Centre in Mukono Municipality.

On Thursday, May 1, Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba confirmed via his official X account that Mutwe is in the custody of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

During the protest, NUP supporters marched peacefully with placards from their party offices on Markhansingh Street to Mahembe Gente Roundabout, calling for justice and accountability.

Bright Muhumuza, NUP’s Western Region Coordinator, called on the government to release all political detainees or present them in court if they are suspected of any crimes.

Joshua Tumukunde, head of NUP’s legal department in the region, condemned the continued harassment of opposition members, stressing that the Ugandan Constitution guarantees every citizen the freedom to support a political party of their choice.
