Mbarara Authorities Shut Down Sky Light Hotel Over Public Health Violations

Story by Aggrey Twesigye

Mbarara City Council authorities on Monday morning shut down Sky Light Hotel in Lugazi Cell, Kakoba Ward, over serious public health violations.

According to city health officials, the hotel was found illegally discharging fecal matter and wastewater into public drainage channels, endangering residents’ health.

The violation contravenes the Public Health Act (Cap 281), which mandates strict sanitation and hygiene standards for public establishments.

Authorities warned that such reckless disposal of waste poses a significant risk of waterborne diseases, prompting the immediate closure of the facility.

Hotel manager Aggrey Muyambi acknowledged the issue, revealing that management had been in talks with the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) to connect the hotel’s waste system to the main drainage network. However, no action had been taken before authorities intervened.

City officials emphasized that the hotel will remain closed until it fully complies with sanitation regulations. They further urged other businesses to prioritize proper waste management to avoid similar punitive actions.
