Local leaders in Mbarara City are urging authorities to register sex workers to address rising crime rates linked to the industry.
The call comes after a tragic incident on Eid day in Market Cell, Nyamityoobora Ward, where a woman identified only as Shamim allegedly stabbed her lover, Dennis, to death.
The couple had reportedly been married for just two weeks before the fatal altercation, which residents say was preceded by ongoing disputes.
Byansi Muhammad, councillor for Mbarara City South A, expressed concern over the growing number of sex workers and the lack of information about them.
He argued that proper registration could enhance security and assist law enforcement in preventing such crimes.
Rwizi Region Police spokesperson SP Samson Kasasira confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing. Shamim is currently on the run, and authorities are working to apprehend her.
The deceased’s body has been taken to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.
