Kasese Leaders Want Arch Bridges Constructed to Reduce Drowning Cases

By Obed Kithende

Kasese District Disaster and Preparedness Committee Chairperson, Mr. Mustafa Kikusa, has asked government to construct arch bridges on Rivers Nyamwamba, Nyamuwasana, and Lhubiriha to address the increasing cases of drowning during the rainy season.

Kikusa said the bridges would help reduce the danger faced by residents who cross the rivers, especially during heavy rains when water levels rise and currents become stronger.

The call comes amid increasing drowning incidents linked to makeshift crossing points. In the past month alone, at least three people have reportedly died in the rivers.

The latest victim is 18-year-old Christine Kyakimwa, who drowned in River Nyamwamba on May 21 while returning home from a confirmation service held at St. Stephen’s COU Kyanjuki in Bulembia Division, Kasese Municipality.

By press time, her body had not yet been retrieved, with residents continuing search efforts.

Kikusa urged government to urgently intervene and establish safer crossing infrastructure to prevent further loss of life.
