Fish farmers in Ibanda District have been urged to maintain proper sanitation of fish ponds to protect and sustain their aquaculture businesses.
Experts warn that poor sanitation can lead to fish deaths and have advised farmers to remove water lilies early to ensure fish have enough oxygen in the water.
Fisheries experts described water lilies as one of the major threats to fish farming, noting that they can significantly affect productivity if not properly managed.
Edgar Nkamushaba, a fisheries expert in Ibanda District, explained that when weeds decompose deep in ponds, they interfere with the breathing mechanisms of fish. He advised farmers to regularly weed their ponds or introduce water channels to improve cleaning and water circulation.
Ms. Lilian Atukwase Rwentaro, a fish farmer in Rwenkobwa, said fish farming involves several critical stages that farmers need to follow carefully to achieve better results.
