The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, has called on all dioceses across the province to establish income-generating projects aimed at supporting clergy after retirement.

Archbishop Kaziimba made the appeal on Sunday at St. James Cathedral Ruharo in Mbarara City during a farewell service organized by Ankole Diocese as he prepares to retire from office in August 2027.

The Archbishop said many clergy members face significant financial challenges after retirement despite having served the Church faithfully for many years. He noted that while priests and bishops retire with honour, many struggle to sustain themselves and their families.

He emphasized the need for dioceses to invest in sustainable projects that can provide financial security and welfare support to retired clergy, enabling them to live dignified lives after active ministry.

During the service, Archbishop Kaziimba commended Ankole Diocese for its numerous development projects, which he said have contributed greatly to the growth and stability of the diocese.

Speaking at the same event, the Bishop of Ankole Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Sheldon Mwesigwa, said the diocese has registered remarkable progress under Archbishop Kaziimba’s leadership. He revealed that the diocese currently provides a monthly allowance of Shs750,000 to retired bishops as part of its commitment to clergy welfare.

In appreciation of his service, Christians of Ankole Diocese bid farewell to the Archbishop by presenting him with ten Friesian cows.

Archbishop Kaziimba, who became the ninth Archbishop of the Church of Uganda on March 1, 2020, is scheduled to retire on August 15, 2027, upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 65 years.

Having joined church ministry in 1985, the Archbishop said he plans to settle in Mukono after retirement. He added that he looks forward to spending more time with his family while continuing to serve the Church through mentorship, discipleship, and preaching the Gospel.
