The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has announced plans to complete the electric fence in sections of the Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area that were previously left uncovered.
The plans were revealed by Frederick Eria Kisame, Chief Warden for the Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area, while addressing the media at UWA offices in Katunguru.
Kisame said the works are expected to be completed before June this year.
He explained that completing the fence will help address challenges such as human-wildlife conflict and poaching.
Kisame urged communities living near the protected area to remain patient and supportive, noting that once completed, the fence will prevent animals from straying into people’s gardens.
Meanwhile, Ignatius Mujulizi, a farmer from Katerera County in Rubirizi District, and Mariam Ithungu, a farmer from Nkonko Village in Kitswamba Sub-county, Busongora North in Kasese District, said they have long suffered crop losses due to wildlife.
They welcomed the development and expressed hope that the project will provide a lasting solution.
