The family of Mackline Amanya, the former Human Resource officer for Ibanda Municipality, on Monday transferred her body to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem, following growing suspicions surrounding the circumstances of her death.

Amanya, who had been receiving treatment at KIU Teaching Hospital since November 2024, was pronounced dead on Saturday.

Her sudden death has raised concerns, particularly among her family, who have alleged long-term domestic abuse at the hands of her husband, Innocent Amwiine, the Ibanda District NRM registrar.

Josephat Tumusiime, the Probation and Social Welfare Officer for Ibanda Municipality, confirmed that Amanya began missing work in September of last year, citing persistent domestic violence as the primary reason for her absence.

A relative, Ketty Kemirembe, also corroborated these claims, stating that Amanya had been bedridden for months, attributing her declining health to the alleged physical abuse inflicted by Amwiine.

Amanya had reportedly expressed her wish to be buried at her ancestral home in Kashenyi Cell, Bugongi Town Council, Sheema South, in Sheema District. She leaves behind two children.

At the time of writing, authorities at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital’s mortuary had not yet released a postmortem report.

The family is preparing to lay her to rest tomorrow (Tuesday) at her parents’ home in Kashenyi Cell, Bugongi Town Council, Sheema South.

An investigation into the cause of Amanya’s death is ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence and provide support to the grieving family.
