Authorities in Rubirizi Town Council Rubirizi district have launched a crackdown on street vendors and illegal structures following new government directives aimed at restoring trade order and urban cleanliness.
The enforcement operation involved removing makeshift stalls, clearing goods displayed along walkways, and addressing unauthorized building extensions and unsanitary latrines. Property owners found in violation were issued notices, while vendors operating outside designated areas were forced to vacate.
The move has, however, sparked frustration among traders, many of whom depend on daily sales for survival. Vendors accused the council of ignoring key issues such as poor drainage and waste management.
Natukunda Martin criticized the authorities for what he termed misplaced priorities, arguing that basic infrastructure challenges should be addressed first.
Another vendor, Mubangizi Boaz, warned that the strict enforcement could have unintended consequences, saying depriving traders of their livelihoods could push some into crime as they struggle to support their families.
