Kwed Construction Ltd has come under scrutiny over alleged substandard work on the newly tarmacked Col. Ndahendekire Road in Mbarara City.
On Monday evening, the Mbarara City Resident City Commissioner (RCC), Catherine Hellen Kamwine, declined to officially commission the road, citing incomplete and substandard works on the UGX 1.5 billion project.
Kamwine noted that the road’s drainage channels are too narrow and raised concern over the absence of pedestrian pavements—defects she said must be rectified before the road can be formally commissioned.
Located in Mandela Cell, Kakoba Ward, the 400-metre road had been in a dilapidated state for decades prior to the upgrade.
The project was awarded to Kwed Construction Ltd under a five-month contract period. Kamwine directed the contractor to address the identified defects to ensure the project meets the required standards.
The 0.4-kilometre road stretches from Mosque Road to the Kisenyi side and was implemented under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) Additional Financing programme.
Mbarara City Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi said only UGX 85 million is required to complete the remaining works and tasked the contractor to promptly rectify the outstanding sections to allow for commissioning.
