NUP Arrested supporters in the dock at Mbarara chief Magistrate’s court

By Aggrey Twesigye

The Mbarara Chief Magistrate’s Court has rejected a bail application for 38 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) who are charged with obstructing police officers on duty.

The group was arrested on November 7 while travelling with NUP presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine, to a campaign rally in Bwizibwera along the Mbarara–Ibanda Road.

The group has been remanded until December 8, 2025, when their bail application will be heard again.

They were formally charged on November 11 with allegedly obstructing Mbarara City Division Police Commander SP Kenneth Gumusiriza Kabwigo as he executed his duties. Among the accused are four parliamentary candidates contesting in the January 15 general elections.

All 38 suspects have pleaded not guilty and applied for bail. However, prosecutors led by Davis Ariiho who have already missed two consecutive hearings objected to their release.

In his ruling on Thursday, Chief Magistrate Andrew Kabombo agreed with the prosecution, noting that investigations were still ongoing and releasing the suspects could jeopardize the process.

The group has been remanded until December 8, 2025, when their bail application will be heard again.
