Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has announced that the long-standing property dispute between Mbarara City and Mbarara District will soon be formally brought before Parliament for debate and resolution.
Speaking on Sunday during a meeting with NRM delegates at Lake View Resort Hotel, where she was endorsed as the party’s Second National Vice Chairperson (Female), Among stressed the importance of reaching a fair and equitable solution to the standoff.
The dispute dates back to 2020 when Mbarara was granted city status. At the time, Local Government Minister Raphael Magyezi directed that the district leadership remain at its current Kamukuzi-based headquarters until a new administration block could be built.
He also ordered that the new city inherit key properties previously under district control.
However, tensions have since escalated between Mbarara District Local Government and Mbarara City Council over several strategic assets, including the administration block currently hosting Makerere University Business School (MUBS) Mbarara branch, the Council Hall, the Presidential House, and Kakyeka Stadium.
In a recent move, Mbarara District Council passed a resolution barring Mbarara City from using these properties for any events until further notice.
Among pledged that Parliament will deliberate on the matter soon to ensure a just outcome for both entities.
