A total of 14 suspects escaped from Rubanda Central Police Station cells, sparking a manhunt by police in Rubanda District. The Kigezi Sub-region Police spokesperson, Elly Maate, confirmed the incident on Thursday, revealing that the suspects made their escape on Sunday night by exploiting a structural crack in the station’s wall.

They removed several bricks to create a passage and fled into the night.Maate attributed the jailbreak to poor infrastructure in the newly created districts of Rubanda and Rukiga, which were carved out of Kabale District. He noted that these districts lack adequate facilities, complicating law enforcement efforts.“The police are doing everything possible to re-arrest the suspects. So far, two have been apprehended, and the search for the remaining 12 is ongoing,” Maate assured the public.

He also highlighted systemic challenges, including the absence of dedicated offices for the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in Rubanda and Rukiga, which has led to prolonged detention of suspects in police custody. The police have appealed to the public to provide any information that could assist in recapturing the escaped individuals.
