The first day of the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations in Mbarara city went on well despite a few challenges, including a shortage of examination papers at six centres and a heavy morning downpour that delayed the start of examinations at some centres.
Godfrey Birungi, the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) area supervisor for Mbarara city, said the shortage affected six examination centres, including Welden School and Mbarara secondary school, where the examination papers delivered were fewer than the number of registered candidates.
Birungi attributed the shortage to a packaging error, adding that the challenge was resolved by collecting surplus examination papers from other centres and redistributing them to the affected schools.
The UCE examinations kicked off nationwide on monday, October 12, with Mathematics in the morning and Chemistry in the afternoon.
Mbarara city has 40 examination centres.
Relatedly, the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations have started smoothly in Ibanda District, with all registered candidates at Ibanda Secondary School and Kagongo Secondary School turning up for the first day of the national examinations.
The examinations commenced on Monday, October 12, 2026, with candidates sitting Mathematics Paper One in the morning before proceeding to Chemistry in the afternoon.

Speaking during a spotcheck, the head teachers explained that all their registered candidates were all present.
