Police in Hiima Division, Kasese District, are investigating the death of Mumbere Wisborn, 20, who allegedly died after being assaulted by a mob that suspected him of being a thief.

According to police, the incident occurred at about 2:00 a.m. on July 11, 2026, when Wisborn, a resident of Sayuni Central Cell, Kihogo Ward, Rugendabara-Kikongo Town Council, left his home to attend a funeral within the same area.

On his way, members of the public allegedly mistook him for a thief and assaulted him, leaving him with serious injuries.

His parents rushed him to Rukoki Hospital for treatment, but he was pronounced dead on the evening of July 13, 2026, at around 8:00 p.m.

Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate said the case, which was initially registered as assault at Rugendabara-Kikongo Police Station, has now been upgraded to murder by mob following the victim’s death.

Police said the body will undergo a postmortem examination as investigations continue and efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved in the attack.
