The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) is mourning the death of Major General Francis Takirwa, a senior and distinguished army officer who passed away on Saturday.
Maj Gen Takirwa died on February 7, 2026, at the UPDF National Referral Hospital in Mbuya after stroke-related complications, aged 60.
Speaking to Crooze FM, the UPDF Second Division Commander, Maj Gen Paul Muhanguzi, described the late Takirwa as a highly professional officer who dedicated his life to safeguarding Uganda’s security interests. He praised him for his commitment, discipline, and many years of distinguished service.
Until his illness, Maj Gen Takirwa served as the Deputy Commander of the Land Forces, headquartered in Mbuya. UPDF officials say burial arrangements will be communicated in due course.
Born on November 7, 1965, in Mbarara District, Takirwa joined the Ugandan military in 1989 and rose steadily through the ranks during a long and decorated career. He served in several key command and staff positions, earning a reputation for strategic acumen and dedication to national service.
The UPDF has described Maj Gen Takirwa as a loyal, disciplined, and patriotic officer whose contribution to the growth and professionalism of the force will be remembered.
