Rukoki General Hospital in Kasese District has raised concern over inadequate infrastructure to handle the growing number of newborn babies requiring specialised care at the facility.
The hospital’s Deputy Medical Superintendent, Dr. Loice Kabbyanga, says at least 1,230 babies weredelivered at the facility last year, with many requiring different levels of attention, including specialised neonatal care.
However, Dr. Kabbyanga says the hospital lacks enough equipment and space to provide effective services to vulnerable newborns, calling for urgent government intervention to expand neonatal care infrastructure.
Kasese District Chairperson, Eliphaz Muhindi Bukombi, acknowledged the challenge, saying the district will work with relevant authorities to address the gaps affecting neonatal services.
The remarks were made after the Rotary Club of Kasese Snow Peaks, with support from the Rotary Club of Winchester in the United Kingdom, donated neonatal equipment worth UGX 129 million to the hospital.
The donation included five infant incubators, three patient monitors, one oxygen cylinder, and one infant radiant warmer, all intended to improve services at the neonatal ward.
Kasese Deputy Resident District Commissioner Lt. Maate Magwara commended the development partners for supporting government efforts to improve healthcare delivery.
He said the government remains committed to addressing challenges affecting health facilities and ensuring better services for communities.
