Leaders in Katwe-Kabatooro Town Council, Kasese District, have expressed concern that the current rainy season is disrupting salt mining activities and threatening the livelihoods of residents who depend on Katwe Salt Lake.
Town Council Chairperson John Bosco Kananura says heavy rains over the past two weeks have flooded salt pans, limiting salt extraction and reducing harvests for local miners.
Kananura noted that the decline in salt production has affected household incomes and local revenue collections, which have dropped from over Shs600 million in previous years to less than Shs400 million annually in recent years.
He has advised residents to diversify their sources of income by engaging in alternative economic activities.
