Police in Kabale District have arrested a woman accused of murdering her own child and dumping the body in water for reasons that are still unclear.
It is alleged that on May 15, 2026, at around 8:00pm, residents spotted Silvia Akankwasa without her child, a toddler aged about two years. This raised suspicion among locals about the whereabouts of the child.
The matter was reported to the Local Council Chairperson, Stella Samaki, who questioned the suspect, but she was unable to account for the child.
Residents then launched a search and reportedly found clothes dumped in a toilet at the suspect’s residence, further deepening suspicion that the child may have been killed.
The Chairperson subsequently reported the matter to Kabale Police.
ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said the suspect was arrested. During interrogation, she allegedly admitted to killing the child and dumping the body in a water stream in Butobere.
Police later recovered the body of the juvenile and took it to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem examination.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the motive behind the alleged killing.
