Fishermen in Kasese District are in panic following a directive limiting fishing boats to 33 per landing site.
Resident District Commissioner Joe Walusimbi said the measure is aimed at curbing illegal fishing and restoring fish stocks in Lake Edward and Lake George, which have been depleted due to overfishing.
He noted that each landing site will strictly operate with only 33 licensed boats, and no vessel will be allowed to fish without clearance from fisheries authorities and security agencies.
The RDC warned that unlicensed boats will be impounded and owners prosecuted, adding that the Uganda People’s Defence Forces Fisheries Protection Unit will enforce the directive alongside local beach management units.
The move follows concerns over declining fish catches and the continued use of illegal fishing gear.
