The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) regional office in Mbarara has started issuing National Identity Cards to Ugandans who participated in last year’s mass ID renewal exercise, as well as those who applied for new IDs.
Speaking in Mbarara, the Mbarara District Registration Officer, Dan Ataaho, said the authority currently has about 30,000 National IDs awaiting collection by their rightful owners.
Ataaho said NIRA has launched an outreach exercise at Mbarara City Council offices to make it easier for residents to collect their IDs without travelling long distances.
According to Ataaho, the authority issues an average of 70 National IDs daily to applicants who turn up for collection.
He explained that the outreach programme aims to reduce congestion at the regional office by bringing services closer to the people, while also supporting Ebola prevention efforts through reduced crowding.
Ataaho also encouraged Ugandans who missed the previous mass registration and renewal exercise to take advantage of the ongoing opportunities for fresh registration.
