The Mbarara Grade One Magistrate’s Court has scheduled January 29, 2026, for the commencement of trial proceedings against 36 National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters accused of obstructing police officers in the line of duty.

The suspects were arrested on November 7, 2025, while accompanying NUP presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu during a campaign event in Mbarara District. Since their arrest, the case has faced repeated adjournments as the defence persistently sought bail for the accused.

State Attorney Rebecca Akuria told court that the prosecution required more time to study the bail applications filed by the defence.

In response, defence lawyers led by Allan Musasiire pressed the court to grant bail, citing the deteriorating health conditions of some detainees, several of whom were observed limping and reportedly in need of medical attention.

In his ruling, Grade One Magistrate Alex Baguma ordered the Officer in Charge of Mbarara Main Prison to submit, within two days, a medical report for any detainees exhibiting visible health complications.

The matter was adjourned to January 29, 2026, when the trial is expected to officially begin.
