Matooke vendors at Kikoona Market in Ruti Ward, Mbarara City, are counting losses following a sharp decline in prices.
Traders say the price of a medium-sized bunch has dropped from Shs 15,000 to Shs 3,000, while a large bunch that previously sold at Shs 40,000 now goes for about Shs 10,000.
The vendors attribute the decline to prolonged drought, reduced customers due to town order enforcement, and rising fuel costs that have increased transport expenses.
Kikoona Matooke Market Chairperson Alex Mukibi has appealed to authorities to intervene, warning that many traders risk losing their businesses if the situation continues.
