Independent candidate Michael Kwarikunda Mbareba has rejected the results of the Rukiga District LC5 election, alleging widespread irregularities during the polling process.
Kwarikunda lost to NRM flag bearer Simon Mutebi Rwamagyenda, who polled 21,028 votes against Kwarikunda’s 17,878.
Speaking to journalists at Apo Hotel in Muhanga Town Council, Kwarikunda said the election was marred by violence, voter intimidation, bribery, alteration of declaration forms, and multiple voting, which he argued compromised the credibility of the outcome.
He claimed that several of his polling agents in Kamwezi Sub-county were assaulted and are currently receiving treatment at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital. He also alleged that some of his campaign vehicles were vandalized and mobile phones stolen during the election period.
Kwarikunda said he is consulting his lawyers and supporters to determine the next course of action.
