Farmers in Kasese Municipality are raising alarms over the increasing spread of pests and diseases that are crippling crop production. Most affected are maize farmers in Kirembe and Kyababinga, where harvests have drastically dropped.

Bright Mumbere, a maize farmer, identified Kayongo, a parasitic weed, as the major culprit. This invasive plant attacks maize right from germination, severely stunting its growth. Mumbere is now appealing for immediate intervention from agricultural experts ahead of the next planting season.

Other farmers, including Judith Ithungu and Simion Masereka, echoed these concerns, noting that their farming investments have outweighed their returns due to poor yields.

Aganatia Bwambale Lhuhalha, the Kirembe Cell Vice Chairperson, criticized the limited outreach and support from agricultural extension workers, blaming this gap for the worsening situation.

In response, Kasese Municipal Agricultural Extension Worker Asanairi Muhindo Bukanywa has urged farmers to remain calm as investigations are underway to identify the best long-term solutions to tackle the infestation.
