EC HALTS SWEARING-IN OF LC1 CHAIRPERSONS IN DISPUTED VILLAGES

By Uziah Tusaasire

The Electoral Commission has directed local government authorities to halt the swearing-in of newly elected Local Council One (LC1) chairpersons in villages and cells where election results are being challenged.

The directive follows complaints received by the Commission challenging the electoral processes and results in several villages and cells following the recently concluded LC1 elections.

In a public notice dated August 17, 2026, Electoral Commission Chairperson Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon said the Commission has started hearing, reviewing and determining the complaints, a process that is still ongoing.

The Commission has therefore advised local government authorities to suspend the swearing-in of chairpersons in the affected villages and cells until the pending complaints are concluded and decisions made on the contested results.

The Electoral Commission says the measure is intended to allow it to complete the complaint-handling process before any further action is taken regarding the affected election results.
