The Resident Judge of Kasese High Court, Justice Lawrence Tweyanze, has appealed to religious and cultural leaders to join efforts to combat defilement, rape, and incest in the district.
Justice Tweyanze expressed concern over the high number of defilement cases and other social vices despite ongoing efforts by various stakeholders to address the problem.
He revealed that out of 50 cases listed for this quarter’s criminal session, 24 are aggravated defilement cases, while 14 involve aggravated robbery.
The judge attributed the high prevalence of aggravated defilement and incest to families attempting to settle such cases outside the legal system, as well as superstitious beliefs promoted by some witch doctors.
Justice Tweyanze called on cultural leaders, religious leaders, and probation officers to intensify community sensitization campaigns and encourage the public to reject practices that undermine the safety and well-being of children.
