Leadership Wrangles Disrupt Boda Boda Sector in Mbarara

By Aggrey Twesigye

Disputes over money, power, and authority among boda boda leaders in Mbarara City have been blamed for continued disorganization in the sector, despite efforts to streamline operations.

The latest clash involves Sadious Owokunda chairperson of the Mbarara Boda Boda Association, and Benson Asiimwe Kaziire, who heads the night operators who confronted each other during a meeting held at Mbarara Independence Park.

The meeting, chaired by Deputy RCC Gerald Tukamuheebwa, saw both leaders accuse each other of undermining established structures and operating independently.

Kaziire accused Owokunda of unlawfully suspending him and making unsubstantiated claims about misconduct among night riders. Owokunda, in turn, faulted Kaziire for disregarding his authority and allegedly mistreating riders operating at night.

Owokunda also accused Kaziire of extorting between UGX 50,000 and UGX 100,000 from riders, despite night operations being restricted.

To ease tensions, Tukamuheebwa called for calm and announced that a follow-up meeting involving the Resident City Commissioner’s office will be held to resolve the dispute.
