The Rukungiri High Court has commenced an in-house criminal session with 40 cases lined up for hearing, covering a range of serious offences.
The session began with a pre-session meeting involving stakeholders from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, defence counsel, court assessors, the Uganda Police Force, and the Uganda Prisons Service.
Presiding over the meeting, Resident Judge Susan Kanyange urged stakeholders to prioritize time management and proper case preparation to avoid delays. She emphasized the need for advocates to adequately brief their clients and for state attorneys to ensure the availability of witnesses.
Justice Kanyange highlighted the importance of coordination among stakeholders for timely case disposal, noting that although the session is being held in-house, most cases originate from Kanungu District.
The cause list includes 17 cases of aggravated defilement, 14 of murder, seven of rape, one case of trafficking in persons, and one of aggravated robbery.
She reaffirmed the Judiciary’s commitment to timely justice delivery, noting that such criminal sessions are key to reducing case backlog and strengthening public confidence in the justice system.
