Authorities in Mbarara district have given street vendors, mobile money operators, kiosk owners, and operators of illegal boda boda stages a two-week ultimatum to clear road reserves .
The announcement was made on Thursday at Bwizibwera Council Hall during a meeting with Town council and Sub-county leaders.
The District Chief Administrative Officer, David Muhwezi stated that the affected groups must vacate by April 23, 2026, after which enforcement operations will commence.
According to Muhwezi, the directive stems from a Ministry of Local Government order issued on March 10, 2026, by the Permanent Secretary, aimed at restoring order in urban business areas.
He noted that the district will use the two-week period to sensitize residents about the changes, urging those affected to secure alternative trading spaces or relocate to designated shops within town councils and sub-counties.
Peterson Kakuru the Rwanyamahembe Town Council Mayor assured that authorities will support affected traders in finding alternative locations.
He also cautioned individuals with illegal structures to begin vacating immediately.
Meanwhile, Francis Karugaba the mayor Rubindi Ruhumba Town council called on vendors operating in road reserves to relocate voluntarily and find suitable business premises before enforcement begins.
