The start of Term One 2026 has been marked by low pupil turnout in schools across Mbarara City, despite the delayed reopening intended to ease preparations.

Reports from several schools indicate that only a small proportion of learners reported on the first day, with the situation more pronounced in lower primary classes.

At Booma Primary School, Deputy Headteacher Editha Ayebare said that out of 300 pupils enrolled last year, only 161 reported on the opening day.

Similarly, at Uganda Martyrs Primary School, Headteacher Fredrick Tumuhirwe reported that about 1,300 pupils turned up out of 1,800 who were enrolled last year.

School administrators have attributed the low turnout to financial constraints and delayed reporting by parents, as they call for improved attendance in the coming days.
