Mayor Robert Kakyebezi and his wife

By Aggrey Twesigye

Voter turnout in Mbarara City has remained low as residents vote to elect a new city mayor and lord councillors.

Reports from several polling stations indicate generally poor participation throughout the morning.

At Kibaya Mixed Primary School, presiding officer Patrick Mutatiina said that out of 266 registered voters, only a handful had cast their ballots by 10:00 a.m.

Mutatiina noted that unlike previous presidential and parliamentary elections—where candidates often facilitated voter transport—no such arrangements were observed during today’s exercise, a factor he believes may have contributed to the low turnout.

Meanwhile, the incumbent Mbarara City Mayor, Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi, voted at Kibaya Mixed Primary School at 10:30 a.m., accompanied by his wife.

The NRM flag bearer, who is seeking a third term, says his focus remains on improving service delivery and upgrading road infrastructure across the city.

Kakyebezi faces competition from Stanley Katembeya Tugume of the People’s Front for Freedom, independent candidate Agaba Senex, and Mweteise Bintabaara of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT).
