Police in Rukungiri District have launched a manhunt for suspects who allegedly lynched and set ablaze a 27-year-old man accused of stealing a goat in Nyakishenyi Sub-county.

The deceased, identified as Allan Mwesigye, a resident of Kacence Cell in Kacence Parish, was reportedly caught red-handed in the early hours of Thursday, November 6, 2025, attempting to steal a goat belonging to Edith Barangirana, a resident of the same area.

According to police reports, after Mwesigye was apprehended, a group of locals descended on him, beating him to death before setting his body on fire. The goat owner later reported the incident to Nyakishenyi Police Station, prompting an immediate response from authorities.

The Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the incident, saying officers visited and documented the scene, recorded witness statements, and conveyed the body to Rwakabengo Health Centre III for a postmortem examination.

He added that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
